Renalfa IPP is building a solar power plant in the REK Oslomej coal complex in North Macedonia under a public-private partnership. It obtained financing from the Green for Growth Fund. The days of coal-fired power plants in the Balkans are numbered, according to all the outages, abrupt closures, market volatility and environmental requirements.
Shortly after Akuo Energy''s photovoltaic project of up to 400 MW in Štip was declared a strategic investment, the Government of North Macedonia gave the same status to two planned solar power plants in Pehčevo and Karbinci in the country''s east. Renewable Power International will invest in a photovoltaic power plant with a capacity of 85 MW.
Slovenia-based GEN-I connected its 17 MW solar power plant southeast of Skopje to the grid four months before the deadline. It is the largest photovoltaic facility in North Macedonia and the Western Balkans.
The start of operation represents an important milestone for the expansion of GEN-I in the implementation of large solar power plants projects and the production of carbon-free electricity and a key contribution to the so-called Green Scenario of the Republic of North Macedonia under the Strategy for Energy Development of the Republic of North
The results of the study are unambiguous: North Macedonia has an enormous untapped potential for renewable energy development. Even when completely excluding all important bird and plant areas, the potential comes to

GEN-I completed the construction of the largest solar power plant in North Macedonia and connected it to the grid in September, four months ahead of the government''s deadline. The power plant, with a total capacity of 17 MW, will produce 25,000 MWh of green energy, which can supply more than 5,500 households.

Andi Aranitasi, EBRD Head of North Macedonia, said: “The new solar plant will help the country, which faces severe air pollution from coal, to reduce its reliance on ageing coal-fired infrastructure. It will also generate cheap electricity in times of very high market prices.
The 10MW solar plant, built on the site of the spent Oslomej lignite coal mine, was constructed by the public company JSC Elektrani na Severna Makedonija (ESM). This is the company’s first solar plant in North Macedonia, developed with a view to diversifying energy sources and supporting decarbonisation.

And the country is well on its way to achieving these goals. The Oslomej solar park, built on a former lignite open pit mining site, is already partly operational and will have an installed capacity of 120 MW when fully completed. There are also a series of auctions for solar power investments to ensure more solar PV projects in the pipeline.
